Divest Fest – Fossil Free South Africa and 350 Africa (Feb 24 Cape Town South Africa)

  • 75 Harrington Street Cape Town South Africa (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Welcome to 2018, and the slightly mad state of play in South Africa right now: Day Zero is rapidly approaching in Cape Town, while cities and institutions of the stature of New York and Lloyds of London (the world's oldest insurance market) are divesting from fossil fuels – but South Africans still aren't widely questioning why we allow companies like Sasol to continue pumping out enormous amounts of climate-breaking greenhouse gases without committing to science-based targets for reductions, as genuinely responsible companies are doing.

So please save this date: On 24 February, Fossil Free SA, with 350 Africa, will be hosting our first Divest Fest, from 9.30am to 1.30pm, at 75 Harrington Street, Cape Town. Divest Fest will be a morning of practical online climate and divestment action, with videos, mini-talks, brainstorming, and ample time to take practical action to push ahead fossil fuel divestment in South Africa (followed by lunch, possibly even with water!) More details to follow...

Media briefing - Shale gas fracking in the Karoo

Fracking for shale gas in the Karoo is probably one of the most debated and emotive topics in South Africa today.

It raises important questions about how South Africa, as a developmental state with a growing need for reliable, accessible, cheap, clean energy, will weigh the potential benefits from a possible successful shale gas industry against the potential environmental and other harms which its development may cause.

Agri SA’s President, Johannes Möller, will brief the National Press Club on the agricultural sector’s views and concerns at a news biefing –

When: Wednesday, 5 July, 2017 @ 10:00
Where: Centurion Lake Hotel, Oval Room
1001 Lenchen Ave North, Centurion

He will take questions.

Complimentary breakfast will be available from 09:00.

RSVP essential: 082 257 0305, martin@nationalpressclub.co.za

This briefing is open to working journalists and members of the National Press Club.

Resisting Mining & Fracking - a movie mini-fest

Resisting Mining & Fracking - a movie mini-fest

The lives of the people have been, and remain, deeply impacted by 'extractive' industries, especially mining. New proposals for mining in our part of the world, as well as the threat of extensive fracking for gas, loom on the immediate horizon. It is vital to understand what's at stake and to learn why so many resent and resist.

We've selected three top films documenting current South Africa struggles against 'neo-extractivism'. Catch all three, and some lunch, by being at CLP on Thursday, 8th June from 10am.

Check out the attached poster for details, and then let the office know you're coming. (Call Cindy on: (033) 2644 380 or email: padkos@churchland.org.za).

Global Divestment Day - South Africa
to May 6

Global Divestment Day - South Africa

This May, we’re taking action across South Africa, and globally, to demand that individuals and our institutions do what is necessary for climate action by divesting from fossil fuels

From record breaking heatwaves to extreme floods, droughts and stronger and more frequent storms, the impacts of a warming world were devastating in 2016. No longer a future threat, climate change is the lived reality of everyone on the plant and unless we act to keep fossil fuels in the ground and transition to 100% renewable energy, things are going to get a whole lot worse.

All over the world, people are standing up to and stopping fossil fuel projects.

Join the Global Divestment Mobilisation — organise an action that helps to highlight the destructive climate impacts of your target institution’s continued support for the fossil fuel industry. https://globaldivestmentmobilisation.org/south-africa/
