NJNG Pipeline - Pinelands Commission Public Comment Meeting

  • Pine Belt Arena 1245 Old Freehold Road Toms River, NJ, 08753 United States (map)

Pack the house to oppose the pipeline!

The New Jersey Natural Gas Southern Reliability Link pipeline is a 30-mile, 30" diameter, 722 psi gas transmission pipeline slated to be routed from Chesterfield, in Burlington County, through the Pinelands to Manchester, in Ocean County. This pipeline is associated with the Garden State Expansion, which includes a new compressor station in Chesterfield. These projects put the health and resources of residents, our ecosystem, and our environmental regulations at risk.

The Pinelands Commission is a group of 15 individuals appointed to uphold the Comprehensive Management Plan (CMP), the rules put in place to protect the Pinelands.

Please come and explain your objections to the project and how the pipeline violates the CMP.

A few of these violations:

1. The current route goes through the Pinelands Preservation Area designated by the Pinelands Protection Act. This route is unnecessary and could instead go through the less sensitive Pinelands Protection Area. In cases such as this one, where a route through the Protection Area is feasible, it is required by the CMP.

2. The pipeline is not needed, and thus is not genuinely associated with the needs of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst. The Joint Base is unable to tap into a 30", 722 psi pipeline without major infrastructure, and NJNG has no intention to modify the system in the near future. Additionally, neither NJNG or the Board of Public Utilities has conducted a reliability analysis that shows that this project is necessary for the base or for the system as a whole. Independent expert reports have demonstrated that the project is unnecessary

3. The pipeline fails to meet essential water resource protections outlined in the CMP. The route runs through two Superfund sites for which the EPA has required specific remediation actions. It is essential to avoid any possible resuspension or spread of contaminants within these areas. Available data on contamination and site geology in these areas and throughout the route is insufficient to ensure the safety of construction and operation of the pipeline.
