Rally/March to Protect Delaware River Basin from Fracking

  • 125 W State St #2 Trenton, NJ 08608 (map)

We need you to come out to march and rally Governor Christie to protect the Delaware River basin from fracking! We are coming together on Tuesday, July 25th to call on our Governor to make the temporary moratorium on fracking in the basin permanent. We are rallying for the river because it provides drinking water to 17 million people. Nearly seven years ago, the Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC) put in a temporary moratorium on fracking in the Basin. We are concerned, however, that there are attempts being made to lift the moratorium given what’s happening in Washington. With the Fossil Fool in the White House, the Delaware River could be threatened with fracking and more pipeline proposals.

Join us on Tuesday, July 25th outside the State Annex Building for a rally and march at the Archives Building to the Governors new office since he is spending $300 million renovating the Statehouse. Thousands of people have come out to ban fracking in the Basin and we need to keep coming out to protect our water!

Around four years ago, there was a proposal to lift the moratorium and adopt weak rules on fracking. When the moratorium was put in place, there were plans for more than 10,000 fracking wells in the Delaware River Basin. Fracking would require hundreds of billions of gallons of water pumped underground with toxic chemicals. These fracking fluids would destroy our pristine streams and cause the loss of tens of thousands of acres of forests. Our forests would be even more fractured by increased pipelines with hundreds of new proposals in the region. This would destroy the basin turning the Delaware River Valley into Oklahoma.

Recently, signals from the DRBC staff have raised alarm bells that the Commission may be taking steps to adopt regulations and lift the current moratorium. We must keep public opposition strong against fracking and urge voting members - the Governors of New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, representing the Basin states, and the Army Corps of Engineers, representing the federal government to make the ban permanent. Without a permanent fracking ban, residents in the Delaware River Basin could be faced with well pads, compressor stations, drilling rigs, and countless miles of pipeline construction.

Please come and if you haven’t signed the petition please do so now. If you cannot make the rally, you can comment to protect the Delaware River here: https://secure3.convio.net/scnj/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=1498
