Raising an off-grid summer base camp

  • Woodbine Ecology Center 2584 Colorado 67 Sedalia, CO, 80135 United States (map)

Whether you are gearing up for a long-term direct action, responding to a disaster, or even planning a multi-day large group gathering in the backcountry, you are going to be setting up or operating out of a base camp. Proper planning, the right equipment, and essential skills can make the difference between a base camp that operates effectively and one that is one crisis away from becoming a nightmare. Join Woodbine staff and community members as we set up an actual summer base camp that will be used as a demonstration and training site.

Drawing on decades of our experiences with a variety of base camps we will teach, share, and demonstrate the fundamental and practical skills of how to set up and operate a small base camp. We will explore both the physical and social infrastructure aspects of base camps.

What we will cover: While the exact agenda will be adjusted to reflect the skills and experience of the participants and will depend a little bit on weather, our goal is to address the following:

Site analysis and mapping (physical and social)
Protocols
Basic Operations: water, shelter, food, health, waste, energy/power
Communications
Decision making
Conflict resolution
Security
Fundamental roles
Appropriate scales for different decisions and actions

The majority of the workshop will take place outside, regardless of the weather (spring in the Colorado mountains can be unpredictable). You will be expected to arrive self-sufficient, just as you should in any base camp, with your own camping and personal gear. This is an excellent opportunity to test any gear that you might use in a non-training situation. We will share the preparation of some meals.

Application and registration: This workshop is by application only. Go to https://woodbinecenter.org/forms/2017-summer-base-camp-applicationto fill out the online application. Applications are accepted until Friday, May 19th, 2017. Applicants will be notified within three business days of when we receive your application. We will start reviewing applications as soon as they arrive so the earlier you apply the better. There is limited space for this workshop so it is possible that we will reach capacity limits prior to the deadline.

Cost: In order to keep the workshop accessible to as many people as possible regardless of financial ability and access and also cover our costs we have a sliding scale from $45 to $300. In the application, you will be asked to self-select the rate that you can pay.
