Kinder Morgan is poised to start a key phase of construction on a pipeline and tanker project that would put hundreds of rivers and streams at risk of oil spills -- but a powerful movement is rising up to defend the land, water, and climate.
On March 10th Coast Salish spiritual leaders and members raised a traditional Coast Salish Watch House near the pipeline route which will act as a base for resistance to the project. 10,000 people in Metro Vancouver marched in solidarity on the same day. Now, Indigenous leaders and local residents are preparing to take bold action on the ground.
The last month, the nation has seen backlash against the Liberal Governments decision to push through Kinder Morgan, ignoring indigenous rights and the climate catastrophe. The last week, Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Government has been having meetings with Kinder Morgan, attempting do anything possible to see this pipeline built. He has considered spending billions of tax payers dollars, use heavily armed authority and even buy the pipeline.
In St. Catharines, we must join thousands across the country to demonstrate that our community will not stand complicit in this project. We will urge our Liberal MP to take an active stand against climate change and environmental racism.
Our event will take place on traditional Anishinabek (ᐊᓂᔑᓈᐯᒃ) Haudenosauneega (Iroquois) land.
