Panel: Indigenous Resistance & Environmental (In)justice

  • Multi-Faith Centre University of Toronto 569 Spadina Ave Toronto, Ontario M5S 2J7 (map)

Panel: Indigenous Resistance and Environmental (In)justice in the Age of Trump and Trudeau.

The panel will discuss the (neo)colonial context and implications of the recent endorsements and approvals by the Trump and Trudeau governments of a number of different pipelines and energy projects from the Kinder Morgan pipeline to the Dakota Access Pipeline in North Dakota. These projects are not only environmentally destructive on both a micro and macro level but are part of a long tradition of corporate and state resource extraction and exploitative projects on Indigenous lands without Indigenous consent. These projects have generated massive Indigenous and wider social resistance on the ground and our panel will discuss the importance of such grassroots resistance to environmentally racist and destructive projects in both the contemporary Canadian and American contexts.
