The Standing Stone camp, also known as the Oceti Sakowin camp, in the Standing Rock reservation in North Dakota USA, is where over 350 Native American tribes have gathered to stop the construction the Dakota Access Pipeline through sacred Sioux cultural sites. This is the largest gathering of Native American tribes in modern history and marks the emergence of a global Indigenous-led resistance to the unchecked expansion of fossil-fuel industries.

In the new Trumpian era the threat to Standing Rock is more serious than ever. Trump has declared the pipeline will go ahead. The Protectors have declared they will not leave, and have been joined by many US Veterans who have vowed to act as “personal shields” for the Tribal Peoples. The people on the ground are resolute that they will remain non-violent in the face of escalating violent attacks by the authorities. Why is it important, as global citizens, that we witness and support this great stand? Standing Rock is about more than one river, or one cultural site. This is the Wounded Knee of our time. A battle that can define what comes after it. A future without fossil fuels, or no future. Resistance camps are springing up across America inspired by the great zeitgeist that Standing Rock represents.
